A face mask is incorporated into many of our regular skin care routines, and it can be super beneficial to our skin health and appearance if you do it right. There are a few common mistakes that we all make or have made from time to time. I am going to highlight some of the easy things you can do to make sure we do to get the most out of our face masks.
Buy The Face Mask For Your Skin Type
You would most likely choose a facial cleanser or moisturiser based around your skin type. So why would you not choose the face mask which is best suited to your skin type?
” I have combination skin, what do I do?”
Ever heard of multi masking? If you have not, this is a face mask which incorporates the use of multiple different face masks to address the different skin concerns in every area of your face.
Cleanse Your Skin First
Whether you’re using a face mask designed for skin clearing or hydration, your skin needs to be prepared to absorb all those wonderful nutrients.
I would recommend you double cleanse the skin so it is thoroughly cleansed. Because applying your face mask over dirt and bacteria which has settled on your skin throughout the day will not provide the results you want.
If your cleanser is causing irritation, you need to change it. Find my top tips on determining the cause of your irritation here.
Longer is Not Always Better
When you read the back of the pack it says, “leave for 15 minutes”. Often you might think ‘if I leave it for half an hour then I will get double the results’.
This is not the case. Face masks are designed to create the optimum contact between the mask and the skin. Leaving the mask on too long it can become drying, and can start to draw hydration out of the skin. Thus doing the opposite to the desired effect.
Don’t Assume Face Masks Are Only For The Day Time
Not all masks are made equal. Some are not designed for over night use. But on the flip side, some face masks are specifically designed for overnight use.
There are overnight masks which contain ingredients which will help you wake with brighter, firmer and more elastic skin. Who wouldn’t want that?
Wash Your Hands First
It is important that your face is clean first, but it is also just as important that your hands are clean before application too. You don’t want to transfer dirt or bacteria onto your face from your hands.
If you want a hands free option, you could always use a clean foundation brush to apply and smooth the mask.
